1. Allegiant - the second sequel to what I thought was one of the sloppiest movies of the decade. These YA apocalypse stories are smart to keep them down to three or so installments, though. Cause I was burnt out on them fifteen minutes into the first one.

Guys, guys. It’s Oscars time. And Indie Spirits time. This weekend is typically like my second Christmas, my happy happy, my special Jaime Mardi Gras. But this year I’m just not feeling it. It’s not that I don’t like any of the nominees. I do. I like the nominees a lot. But there are a lot of people not nominated who I think should’ve been. Or at the very least, could’ve been. And we’ve all heard the endless #Oscarssowhite talk. We’ve seen the tag, we’ve heard from Will and Jada, Spike and Clooney and Jamie Foxx. Even goddamn Charlotte Rampling had to go off and say something. Something extremely, ridiculously dumb. I’m not going to use this (very small platform) to give my overall opinion on #Oscarssowhite. Because it doesn’t fucking matter. And, more importantly, the Academy Awards are only a small problem at the tail end of a much larger issue.

It came on slowly; slowly and then all of a sudden I couldn’t stop thinking about what she was doing or imagining what my name would look like written out as Jaime Davis-Swinton.

Have you seen Legally Blonde? Look, don’t get all bent out of shape. I know the title up there says February but I promise you I have a point. So, have you seen Legally Blonde? You have, right? There’s a nerdy oafy law school character in it played by someone named Osgood Perkins. Osgood! Perkins. Osgood Perkins played my second favorite character in Legally Blonde (my first fave is Bruiser, because.) Ok so anyway Osgood Perkins just so happens to be the son of Anthony Perkins, he of creepy Psycho fame. And Osgood Perkins also happens to be a director, and he made a scary movie called February.

If you’ve seen the original Magic Mike, you know it’s not just “that male stripper movie.” Yeah there’s hilarious dance sequences and Matthew McConaughey in chaps and crazed, screaming women and penis pumps and bad acting from actresses who shall remain nameless. But the film, directed in all seriousness by Steven Soderbergh, takes a long, dark look at the world of male entertainers, complete with drugs, backstabbing, violence, and avarice.

The first thing I learned in film school had to do with movie marketing. When you buy a ticket to watch a film, you’re really buying in to the poster and trailer and other marketing biz baz, not the movie itself. Because, duh, when you buy that ticket, you haven’t seen that movie yet. It could totally suck! The marketing game (i.e. posters, trailers, behind the scenes featurettes) sold you, son. I learned this in the late 90s, before YouTube and the internets and all that, when you couldn’t watch movie trailers for days and days on end (which I’ve been known to do). So instead, in class, we focused on movie posters, or one-sheets. A one-sheet features the heart of a film’s story, told mostly in visual form, condensed into one page. It’s like the soul of the movie you guys. Yeah I know that’s major cheeseball, but it’s truth.
