The Mountain
Directed and co-written by Rick Alverson
Starring Tye Sheridan, Jeff Goldblum, Hannah Gross and Denis Lavant
Not rated, but there’s a bit of nudity, swearing and some disturbing images of lobotomies
Running time: 1 hour and 46 minutes
by Benjamin Leonard, Best Boy
This is the first film I’ve watched by Alverson and I’d heard his earlier work (Entertainment and The Comedy) proved to be “difficult” for many. The quick and dirty on this film is that it stars Jeff Goldblum as one of the few remaining doctors in the early 1950s to be a proponent of lobotomy and Tye Sheridan plays his photodocumentarian. So I wasn’t exactly sure what to think going into this. My only expectation was that it might be overwhelming at times. For better or worse, that wasn’t the case.

Reviews of Jeff Goldblum’s performances in films

Halloween is a time for ghosts, ghouls, and of course…Goldblum. In Transylvania 6-5000, Jeff Goldblum plays Jack Harrison, a journalist working on the types of stories one would find in The National Enquirer. Jack is accompanied by fellow reporter Gil Turner (Ed Begley Jr.) to investigate a story set in Transylvania.

The Big Chill, despite the title, is not a film about romance at a ski resort like I originally thought. No. That film is called Better Off Dead. And since this column is called Just Jeff and not Just John (Cusack), I’ll focus on The Big Chill instead…

Just Jeff: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
Reviews of Jeff Goldblum’s performances in films

I spent lots of time trying to figure out which Jeff Goldblum film to review for the anniversary issue of Moviejawn. Sure, I could review Independence Day. That obviously deals with a celebratory event. I even considered discussing Jurassic Park. Both movies are action-packed and fun. However, I felt Moviejawn deserved more. After all, it’s celebrating its first year. I had to go big this time by reviewing the 1984 cult classic, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Ladies and gentleman, prepare to dive into another dimension.

Just Jeff: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Reviews of Jeff Goldblum’s performances in films

Let me tell you about my boat, or in this case, Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Bill Murray stars as Steve Zissou, an oceanographer on a quest to seek revenge on the shark that ate his friend. In addition to blowing said shark up with dynamite, Zissou is working on saving his failing marriage, bonding with his son, and trying to beat his rival, Alistair Hennessey (played by Jeff Goldblum)…

The Fly (1986)
Directed by David Cronenberg
The Fly begins at some swanky scientific gala. Jeff Goldblum graces the scene as Seth Brundle, a wide-eyed and secluded scientist interested in teleportation. He’s got brains, bronze, and a super 80’s tech-inspired lair. There’s no doubt about it…Seth is a genetically gifted gentleman. However, there are two things missing in Seth’s life: love and a successful career in science. Seth quickly catches the eye of Veronica (Geena Davis), a reporter anxiously searching for the next big juicy story. He impresses Veronica by taking her out for cheeseburgers and teleporting her stockings. What a man. At this point, I’m completely on board for scenes of Goldblum’s signature speech pattern, toned skin, and long wavy locks, but I get a monster instead.

Earth Girls Are Easy (1988)
Directed by Julien Temple
Love is in the air…and so is an orange blimp spaceship with fuzzy space men riding inside. Sound bizarre? Well, welcome to Earth Girls Are Easy. Valerie (Geena Davis) is a totally tubular manicurist preparing for her wedding with Ted (Charlie Rocket) aka Dr. Love. Turns out that Ted is prescribing his love to many patients. Down on her luck, Valerie decides to do what most scorned women living in L.A. would do...get a tan. As she lounges about in a string bikini, a vibrant spaceship (very similar to Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice award) crash-lands into her pool. Wiploc (Jim Carrey), Zeebo (Damon Wayans) and Mac (Jeff Goldblum) are located inside.
